He worked his way through high school and earned an accounting degree from Dyke College, a local business college, in 1922. He accepted a position in accounting with the Francis Byerlyte Corporation, and subsequently became president and owner of the company, later known as Consolidated Coatings Corporation. He married Inez Pink in 1929, and the couple raised two sons. Myers' primary philanthropic interest was aging and the elderly. He was instrumental in facilitating the move of the Jewish Orthodox Home for the Aged from the Glenville neighborhood to Beachwood, Ohio. He also assisted in the construction of R.H. Myers Apartments, an independent living facility for the elderly. He served as the President of the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland from 1964 to 1969 and, along with his wife, established the David and Inez Myers Foundation. In 1995, Dyke college was renamed David N. Myers College in recognition of Myers' contributions to the school. The family immigrated to the United States in 1920 and settled in Cleveland in 1921, eventually founding what became known as Forest City Enterprises, Inc. Leonard Ratner married Lillian Bernstein in 1924 and had two children: Ruth Ratner Miller and Albert B. Ratner. Leonard Ratner held many important positions on community boards during his lifetime, including the positions of honorary life trustee at the Jewish Welfare Federation, the Jewish Community Federation, and Mount Sinai Hospital. His daughter Ruth was a civic leader, businesswoman, and philanthropist. She and Samuel Miller had four children. Albert B. Ratner married Faye Katz in 1950 and had two children. Orphaned at age four, she was raised by the Davis family. She attended Dallas Colored High School and Fisk University before applying to the School of Applied Social Sciences at Western Reserve University. Johnson graduated in 1928 with a master's degree in social work. As a social worker, Johnson was first employed by Associated Charities of Cleveland. Later, she worked for the Cuyahoga County Department of Welfare in conjunction with the federal program Aid to Dependent Children. She retired in 1961. Johnson married Elmer Cheeks in 1929. They had two sons. Cheeks died in 1941, and Johnson married Raymond Johnson in 1957. He died in 1983. Mrs. Johnson was an active member of Mt. Zion Congregational Church, an avid reader and traveler, and a supporter of a variety of charities. At age 105, she attended the inauguration of President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C. Soon after, with the assistance of a freelance writer, she wrote her autobiography. It was published shortly after her death in 2010. The Severance family was also known for its philanthropic activities. Solon Severance, a Cleveland banker, was the son of Solomon Severance and Mary Helen Long, and a brother of Louis Severance. He was also a descendent of John Walworth, an early settler of Cleveland who was a civil engineer and was appointed in 1806 as the Custom Collector for the District of Erie. Solon's wife, Emily Allen, was the daughter of Dr. Dudley Allen, and the sister of prominent surgeon Dudley P. Allen. Solon and Emily's daughter, Julia Severance Millikin, was the wife of Benjamin Millikin, a noted Cleveland ophthalmologist. Julia's children included Helen Millikin Nash and Severance, Marianne, Dudley, and Louise Millikin. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Severance family members; allied families including the Allen, Hadden, Long, Millikin, Nash, Prentiss, Robbins, and Tryon families; and unrelated individuals, including Jacob D. Cox, Charles Gleason, and Rutherford B. Hayes. Crawford headed Thompson Products, Inc. (later TRW Inc.) as it moved from an automotive and aircraft parts manufacturer into the aviation and aerospace industries. A leader of Cleveland's philanthropic community, Crawford served on the boards of many cultural institutions. He was appointed to the Western Reserve Historical Society Board of Trustees in 1944 and later served as it's president. He was instrumental in the transfer of the Thompson Auto Album and Aviation Museum collection to WRHS in the 1960s, which became the nucleus of the Frederick C. Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum of WRHS. Crawford was married twice; to Audrey Cecelia Bowles in 1932, and to Kathleen M. Saxon in 1975. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Frederick C. Crawford and various Crawford family members. Views of various Crawford family homes are included, as are images from travels taken by Crawford. Portraits and views of Steel Products Co. and Thompson Products Inc. facilities and employees, including Thompson Products president Charles E. Thompson and Thompson family members, are also part of the collection. Pioneers in the aviation and aerospace industries are represented in the collection and include James E. Doolittle, T. Keith Glennan, aviatrix Jacqueline Cochran, and three time Thompson Trophy Race winner Roscoe Turner. Others depicted include Douglas MacArthur, Dwight D. Two, Abel (1883 1962) and Alexander (1887 1945), were especially accomplished artists. Samuel (1888-1977) was a playwright and fiction writer. David (1893-1989) was an insurance agent and writer. David's wife, Florence Haber Warshawsky (1903-1998), was a child psychologist and active Jewish community leader. Abel Warshawsky was the first head leader of boys at Camp Wise in 1908. His brother David attended the camp under Abel's supervision and became a lifelong advocate for Camp Wise and the activities of the Council Education Alliance and its successor, the Jewish Community Center. Its facilities were moved to Carnegie Avenue in 1908, and to its present site on Shaker Boulevard in 1927. After a brief merger with MetroHealth Medical Center in the early 1990s, it was sold to Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation and its Ohio partner, the Sisters of Charity of Saint Augustine in 1997. The non-profit proceeds of the sale were used to create the Saint Luke's Foundation. The hospital is currently owned by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Augustine Health System and the University Hospitals Health System. It was the successor to the Cleveland Community Fund (est. 1919). In 1971 it changed its name to United Torch Services. It became United Way Services in 1978. The collection consists of photographs and negatives of leaders and activities of United Torch Services of Cleveland, Ohio. Also included are views of award presentations and banquets, and photographs of posters and booklet covers. Photographs related to the Minutemen, a United Appeal affiliated organization, are included. Negatives in the collection depict various United Torch buildings, centers, activities, and members. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Ritchie, Hale, Cozad, Davis, and Mather family members. It merged with the Welfare Council of Cleveland in 1917 to form the Cleveland Welfare Federation. In 1972 it became the Federation for Community Planning. By 1919 it had given up solicitation of funds and by 1966 their allocation also, evolving into a specialized community planning agency. The collection consists of views of various activities sponsored by the Federation for Community Planning. Some of the activities pictured include the Foster Home Recruiting Center, Mass Blood Testing Program, TB Clinic van, and Golden Age Hobby shows. Also included are individual and group portraits of those associated with the Federation, including Edward D. | | | | Creator: | Walton-Jennings Family | | | | Dates: | 1860-1964 | | | | Abstract: | John Whittlesey Walton was a prominent Cleveland, Ohio, businessman and philanthropist. The nephew of Charles Whittlesey, Walton started a ship chandlery business and co-founded the Upson-Walton Company in 1893. In 1867, Walton was one of the men responsible for the revival of the YMCA in Cleveland. From 1874-1926, Walton was actively involved in charity, serving during this period as treasurer of the Bethel Associated Charities. Throughout his life, Walton was keenly interested in the field of sociology and in the emerging scientific approach to social work. His daughter, Gladys Walton, was involved in numerous dramatic and musical events. She married Lamson Jennings in 1919. The collection consists of 5 photograph albums and 9 color stereo transparencies. Four albums contain portraits of family members and friends of the Walton-Jennings families. Those pictured include members of the Lamson, Calhoun, Clark, Sturdevant, Curtis, Judd, Kinney, North, and Hart families. Some identified photographs are missing from the albums. The fifth album contains prints and photographs of the travels of John Whittlesey Walton to England, Florida, Toronto, New England, and Europe. | | | | Creator: | Wattenmaker Advertising | | | | Dates: | 1930-1948 | | | | Abstract: | Wattenmaker Advertising evolved from a business enterprise founded by Jacob Wattenmaker (1894-1968), a Cleveland, Ohio, area businessman and philanthropist. Wattenmaker began his career as owner of a wholesale dry goods store in Cleveland in the 1920s. He then became merchandising manager of Bailey Co., a clothing store. In 1932 he founded his own chain of dress shops and was later named managing director of the Cleveland Fur Institute and Executive Secretary of the Cleveland Fashion Institute. He was a lecturer in merchandising, commerce, and public relations at several area schools, including Fenn College, Cleveland College, and John Carroll University. Subsequently, Wattenmaker opened a public relations and merchandising counseling office which evolved into Wattenmaker Advertising, Inc. after World War II. Wattenmaker Advertising specialized in food and real estate campaigns. Some of its larger campaigns were for the Northern Ohio Food Terminal, the Dry Cleaners Guild, and Zinner's, a flower shop. In 1965, Wattenmaker Advertising won the first Cleveland Advertising Club's Horace C. Treharne Medal for its campaign for the Sandusky Distributing Co. Following Jacob Wattenmaker's death in 1968, control of the company was given to his son, James. Crawford headed Thompson Products, Inc. (later TRW Inc.) as it moved from an automotive and aircraft parts manufacturer into the aviation and aerospace industries. A leader of Cleveland's philanthropic community, Crawford served on the boards of many cultural institutions. He was appointed to the Western Reserve Historical Society Board of Trustees in 1944 and later served as it's president. He was instrumental in the transfer of the Thompson Auto Album and Aviation Museum collection to WRHS in the 1960s, which became the nucleus of the Frederick C. Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum of WRHS. Crawford was married twice; to Audrey Cecelia Bowles in 1932, and to Kathleen M. Saxon in 1975. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Frederick C. Crawford, his family, friends, and associates, and views of his activities relating to awards, tours, dinners, business enterprises, clubs, travel, residences, and museums. He joined Moses, Levy and Co., a fancy goods and toy store, in 1868. It became Levy and Stearn in 1872 and Stearn and Co., ca. 1905. Stearn was a director of the Society for Savings, the American Savings Bank and other institutions. He was a trustee of the Foundation of Jewish Charities and of the Jewish Orphan Asylum. He married Bertha Rohrheimer in 1876. Terry (1862-1926) was a business executive in the incandescent lamp industry with broad philanthropic interests related to World War I relief. Terry established the National Electric Lamp Association (NELA) with Burton G. Tremaine in 1901 in Cleveland, Ohio. Formed ostensibly as a consortium of small lamp makers in order to compete with industry giants such as General Electric and Westinghouse, NELA was found to be secretly and 75% financed by General Electric during a federal anti-trust suit in 1911. Terry served as vice president of GE and under his leadership Nela Park was built, one of the first campus-like research and production facilities in the United States. Terry's deep interest in World War I led to the establishment of the Nela Fund. Terry supported and corresponded with orphans and soldiers of the war, and acquired a large collection of posters, publications, and artifacts relating to the historical significance of World War I. The collection consists of an album containing photographs, drawings, programs, and memorabilia relating to the first to third annual conventions (1904-1906) of the national Electric Lamp Association, held respectively at Muskoka, Wisconsin; Montmorency Falls, Quebec, Canada; and Chautauqua, New York.
